PASTORAL:
This involves showing that I can relate effectively to the individuals I meet during my visits. I can do this by:
a) Describing how to initiate conversations in the workplace with people at all levels.
b) Exploring connections between people's worldviews, personal experience and the Christian faith.
c) Developing the skills of listening and responding appropriately to people's questions, needs, and confidences.
d) Being sensitive to people of other faiths.
PROPHETIC:
This involves showing that I can assess situations at the workplace in the light of the Christian gospel and respond appropriately. I can do this by:
a) Describing the style and ethos of prophetic ministry by a workplace chaplain at the places visited.
b) Analysing a situation in terms of justice and the integrity of creation.
c) Describing a range of possible actions to response to this analysis.
CHURCH RELATED:
This involves showing that I can assess situations at the workplace in the light of the Christian gospel and respond appropriately. I can do this by:
a) Describing the ecumenical nature of workplace visiting.
b) Relating my work to local strategy of industrial mission.
c) Relating appropriately to other workplace chaplains in my area (or, if none exists appreciating the value of seeking support and further personal development elsewhere).
d) Encouraging local churches to play their part in mission to the world of work.
e) Relating my insights of industrial mission to the wider mission of the Church.

CORE COMPETENCIES FOR WORKPLACE CHAPLAINS
THEOLOGICAL:
This involves showing that I understand why I undertake workplace visiting
I can do this by:
a) Describing, in explicitly theological terms, why I undertake workplace visiting, with particular reference to the theology of mission.
b) Explaining in simple terms understandable to an ordinary church member why I undertake workplace visiting.
c) Explaining to a non-Christian in the workplace what I am doing there.
ECONOMICS:
This involves showing that I can discover and understand the secular significance of workplaces I visit. I can do this by:
a) Describing what information about the workplace is significant, and how it may be discovered:
b) Describing how the workplaces I visit are affected by forces in the local, national and global economies.
c) Describing the effect of this workplace on community and environment.
d) Describing the organisational structures and power relationships that operate in the workplaces I visit.
PRACTICAL:
This involves showing that I can visit workplaces purposefully, systematically, sympathetically, and with confidence. I can do this by:
a) Describing the aims of workplace visiting.
b) Describing how to analyse a workplace and plan a visiting strategy.
c) Keeping appropriate records of visiting undertaken and information obtained.
d) Describing the obligations and responsibilities of being a privileged visitor, including health and safety, and confidentiality, issues.
